Adhesives are products which take care of the strength of bonded joints. Adhesives are available in a wide range of chemistries (like epoxies, polyurethanes, MS Polymers and MMA). Several chemistries are available in 1, 2 and even 3 component versions. 1 component adhesives could be cured with the addition of moisture, heat or UV radiation depending on the chemistry.
Adhesives could be divided in many different ways, but the split between stiff and flexible (elastic) adhesives is easy to use. By using stiff adhesives you try to limit the amount of movement and by using elastic adhesives you try to coop with differences in thermal expansion over the thickness/geometry of the adhesive bead used.
